Provides evidence of innovative, creative, and effective educational materials, methods, and/or opportunities for individual or group learning that meets specific educational objectives related to increasing understanding of the environment and/or changing ways that we live to improve environmental stewardship.
OUTSTANDING YOUTH ACTION (LEADER OR ORGANIZATION)
Any youth leader (under the age of 30) or youth-led organization that has taken leadership or action with an environmental education or communication initiative with the following criteria:
- fostering a greater understanding of ecological principles or environmental issues,
- fostering of environmental ethics,
- developing skills,
- implementing environmental action projects, etc.
OUTSTANDING CLASS, SCHOOL, OR UNIVERSITY
Any class, teacher, school, or University that has gone above and beyond the call of duty by developing and implementing innovative environmental education or communication programs with the following criteria:
- fostering a greater understanding of ecological principles or environmental issues,
- fostering of environmental ethics,
- developing skills,
- implementing environmental action projects, etc.
OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR
Awarded to an educator in a formal, or informal education (early childhood education, or other programming), that has successfully developed and/or carried out transformative environmental education or communication programs that include:
- fostering a greater understanding of ecological principles or environmental issues,
- fostering of environmental ethics,
- re-imagining curriculum to incorporate environment and outdoor learning; developing skills,
- implementing environmental action projects, etc.
OUTSTANDING POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTION, DEPARTMENT, PROGRAM, OR CLUB
Any post-secondary educational institution, department, program, or a club at an institution, that has demonstrated excellence in developing and implementing innovative environmental education or communication programs with the following criteria:
- fostering a greater understanding of ecological principles or environmental issues
- fostering of environmental ethics
- re-imagining curriculum to incorporate environment and outdoor learning, developing skills,
- implementing environmental action projects, or reducing the human use of energy or resources. The work may involve a specific course, project or an on-going commitment to environmental education.
OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION
Any organization (governmental, NGO, non-profit or private) that has significantly contributed to an environmental education or communication project demonstrating an increase in public awareness about the environment and/or acted as a catalyst to foster environmental education initiatives.
OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL IN AN ORGANIZATION
An individual associated with an organization (governmental, NGO, non-profit or private) that has made a significant contribution to environmental education of communication in one or more of the following:
NEWSMAKER OF THE YEAR
This award may be given to a significant story of environmental stewardship, action, or leadership that increases environmental awareness in Canada and communicates to the public a story that may include: education, conversation, preservation, and reconciliation. The recipient may be awarded to those involved directly in the news-making event, or a reporter or journalist who has notably covered the story.
